Book Review 'The Menopause Survival Guide' By Christin Perkinson

Let’s be real here. Perimenopause can be the pits. I am so glad I found this light-hearted and informative book about dealing with this turbulent time of midlife.

This is a topic that for generations of women, and men for that matter, has long been considered taboo. No body talked about it, yet half of the population goes through this transition it if they reach middle age.

I downloaded this book because it was recommended by a friend. Yes, we are both at that age where this is all starting to rear its ugly head.

A lot of the information out there is purely clinical and simply talks about what is happening with your hormones. It may even give a detailed description of all the debilitating symptoms that can make day to day life a down right struggle.

What most resources lack is practical advice on the following.

  • If you have a male partner, how to talk to them about what you are going though

  • Not sugar coating the symptoms that no one talks about

  • Advice for partners on how they can offer support

  • How to strengthen your intimate relationship during this challenging time

  • How to face it all with humour. After all, if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry, right?

What I also loved about this book; is it talks about the positives of entering this third phase of our lives. Yes, that’s right its not all doom and gloom. Being reminded that there are always things to be grateful for no matter what you are facing is extremely helpful.

In the last six to twelve months, I have been feeling scared, anxious, and at times, depressed about navigating heading into menopause. At times, I look in the mirror and wonder ‘Who the hell is that?’

I feel my once reliable and clockwork timed menstrual cycle is playing a cruel joke on me just to derail my life. This book has made me feel much better knowing how the symptoms may affect my work life, my sleep, my mental function, my mobility, and my intimate relationships.

If you or someone you know is going through perimenopause, I recommend gifting them this book.

Men, if you have a partner going through it, please read this book.

I give it four stars.
